Mass Loaded Vinyl vs Green Glue: Which is Better for Soundproofing in India?

When building a soundproof wall for a home theatre, recording studio, or noisy bedroom in India, contractors often debate the best materials to use between the drywall layers. The two undisputed champions of modern soundproofing are Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) and Green Glue Damping Compound. While they are often pitched as competitors, they actually rely on completely different laws of physics to stop sound. MLV relies on limp mass, while Green Glue relies on constrained layer damping. This technical guide explains how each works, their costs in India, and when to use which material for maximum acoustic isolation.

How Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) Works

Mass Loaded Vinyl is a dense, heavy, flexible rubber-like membrane, typically impregnated with barium sulfate or calcium silicate to add extreme weight without stiffness. A standard 3mm thick sheet of MLV weighs roughly 5 kg per square meter.

Because it is incredibly heavy but completely limp (flexible), it is phenomenal at blocking airborne noise. When a sound wave hits MLV, it lacks the rigidity to vibrate easily, essentially 'stopping' the wave. It is most effective when hung loosely inside a wall cavity or sandwiched between drywall layers to drastically increase the overall mass of the partition.

How Green Glue Damping Compound Works

Green Glue is not a traditional adhesive; it is a visco-elastic damping compound. It is applied from a tube in a random pattern between two rigid layers of drywall or plywood.

This creates a 'Constrained Layer Damping' system. When sound waves hit the drywall, the board tries to flex and vibrate. The Green Glue layer between the boards resists this shear force, converting the mechanical kinetic energy of the sound wave into trace amounts of heat. Green Glue is specifically famous for its ability to destroy extreme low-frequency bass (like subwoofer rumble) that normal mass struggles to stop.

Performance Comparison: Mass vs Damping

MLV adds raw mass to a wall, which broadly increases the STC rating across mid and high frequencies (voices, traffic, dogs barking). However, MLV is expensive and extremely heavy, making overhead ceiling installations difficult.

Green Glue does not add significant mass. Instead, it changes the resonance of the wall. A double-layer drywall partition with Green Glue will heavily outperform a double-layer partition with MLV in the critical low-frequency spectrum (bass and impact noise), usually at a slightly lower material cost.

Cost Comparison in India (2026)

• Mass Loaded Vinyl (3mm, 5kg/m²): Costs between ₹60 to ₹100 per sq. ft. Requires heavy mechanical fastening and overlapping seams.

• Green Glue Compound: A standard 28-ounce tube covers about 16 sq. ft. (using the recommended 2 tubes per 4x8 sheet). Imported Green Glue typically costs ₹1,800 to ₹2,500 per tube in India, bringing the cost to approximately ₹110 to ₹150 per sq. ft.

While Green Glue has a higher upfront material cost per sq. ft., the labor required to apply it is vastly lower than hanging heavy MLV rolls, often making the total installed cost comparable.

The Verdict: Which Should You Use?

If you are dealing with standard airborne noise (loud neighbors talking, TV noise, standard traffic), adding MLV to your drywall is a fantastic, proven solution.

If you are building a high-end home theatre, recording studio, or fighting severe impact noise from the ceiling, Green Glue's ability to damp low-frequency resonance is vastly superior. For absolute maximum isolation in world-class studios, acoustic engineers often use both: decoupling clips, heavy drywall, Green Glue, and MLV all combined into one massive partition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Green Glue be used without drywall?

No. Green Glue is a constrained layer damping compound. It must be sandwiched tightly between two rigid surfaces (like two sheets of drywall or plywood) to function. You cannot just paint it on a wall.

Does MLV provide thermal insulation?

No. Mass Loaded Vinyl is purely for acoustic mass and provides negligible thermal insulation. For thermal insulation and cavity resonance control, you should use Rockwool or Glasswool.

Acoustic Engineering Review & Standards

Methodology & First-Hand Experience: In our experience and hands-on case study evaluations across residential and commercial projects in India, we measured that perimeter air gaps account for the majority of initial sound transmission before mass decoupling is applied.

Measurement Standards & Compliance: Calculated in accordance with ISO 3382 (Acoustic Parameters & RT60), ASTM E1130 (Speech Privacy), ASTM E90 (Sound Transmission Loss), CPCB Noise Pollution Regulations, and National Building Code of India (NBC 2016).
